Memorial Gym Make Over

Memorial gym is in the works for a overhaul makeover! The renovation of memorial gym is estimated to cost approximately 12.5 million dollars. In the gym they will be creatin a new basketball court with an expected capacity of 3,100 people, a sure improvement considering there is no seating in the memorial gym currently. Along with a permanent home for the basketball team, each varsity sport with have their own dedicated locker room. The plan also states that the gym will improve their acedemic support center along with updated heating, ventilation, electrical work, lighting, and air conditioning. Possibly most exciting for athletes is the idea of modernizing their training rooms and makeing it easily accessible for indoor and outdoor sports. A date for renovations has not yet been set, but for the athletes sake, lets hope it is sooner raher than later!

Something Other Than Baseball!!!

This Saturday starting at 8:00 a.m there will be a lumberjack competition!! The event will be held in the field off of the Alagash road on campus. The competition is sure to harness some true Maine spirit so if you are up for some wood chopping, tree lifting, and barrel running be sure to make an appearance! The competition will carry on all day until an undisclosed time!

Up-Coming Baseball!!

U-Maine baseball will be on the road again this weekend when they travel to Wagner for a four game series! Maine played its first home games of the 2009 season last weekend when they hosted Sacred Heart for four games. The Pioneers pocketed the doubleheader on Saturday before Maine rebounded to take both games on Sunday, lets hope that come-back kid spirit will carry into this weekend! The Black Bears are currently 12-9 this season.

Freshman Injury

Black Bear Freshman Kyle Stilphen is in the second week of his expected 3 week sideline from the diamond. During the tournament in Florida, while on third base against Duquesne, Stilphen suffered a bad hop to the face leaving him with a broken nose and a fractures orbital bone beneath his left eye, fortunately, neither bone was displaced.

Kyle's father, Paul Stilphen said, "it swelled up pretty good." Stilphen is planning to see a specialist in hopes of being cleared sooner.

The Gardiner area high school graduate is off to a good start at Maine. As of now, he has played third base, second base, and desigated hitter, and has already been na,ed America East Rookie of the weel due to a .308 batting average.

Here is to a healthy and speedy recovery!
